Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Leisure and free time play a fundamental role in the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children. During the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the child and youth population has faced a series of challenges that have affected both their health and their lifestyle. The study aimed to analyze the documents related to the transformation of leisure and free time in children and adolescents and the main characteristics of games during and after confinement because of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD. A systematic review of the scientific literature was carried out using the PRISMA method. The information search was performed on September 1, 2023, in the Wef Of Science, Pubmed and Scopus databases; The search terms in English were: (“COVID-19” AND “play” AND “leisure” AND “children”). After in-depth analysis, the systematic review finally included 17 articles. RESULTS. Current research on children's leisure during the pandemic is scarce and sometimes contradictory. The findings show a decrease in physical leisure activities during the pandemic and an increase in sedentary behaviours. The analysed studies agree that parents present a key role in promoting healthy lifestyles. CONCLUSION. More long-term research is needed to better understand the effects on children during disruptive events like the pandemic.
